Breathe In... Breath Out

Did you know the average person breathes about 20,000- 25,000 times a day?! What if we told you a large majority of us are doing it incorrectly? 🤔

Sure, we can get by with this dysfunctional breathing, but that doesn’t mean we’re healthy. We get most of our energy through our breath but if the way in which air is getting in and out of our body is not optimized then regardless of our other good habits we are still hindering our body.
So what do we do?
Breathe through our 👃🏼noses instead of our 👄mouths!! 
But if oxygen finds its way into our body one way or another why does it matter? Well….
The nose has 30 different functions! Plus when we take air in through our nose it slows the air down for one, it humidifies it, it moistens it, it pressurizes it and it conditions it so that by the time it reaches our lungs, our lungs can better absorb that oxygen. We get 20% more oxygen breathing through the nose than we do through the mouth. Plus our nose is our first line of defense against pathogens, pollution, bacteria, and viruses! 🤧
​Mouth breathing is incredibly common especially in kiddos - a recent study found about 45% of kids breathe through their mouths.

😴Those numbers are worse for sleeping adults, around 60% - 70% of us mouth-breathe in our sleep. Snoring and sleep apnea are scary common but consider this - if you’re struggling to do something for ⅓ of your life think how the rest of your body systems suffer?!

If you find breathing through your nose difficult, take a closer look at the reasons!
A deviated septum could be to blame. We encourage our patients to engage in a combination of Upper Cervical Chiropractic care and Craniosacral Therapy to ensure you’re structurally aligned.

Difficulties could also be arising from an orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD). We recommend connecting with the team at Professional Dental of Clarkston about their OMD, Sleep Apnea and Airway  treatments.

👃Once you’ve mastered the habit of  breathing through your nose, there’s one other thing to remember….

Breathe less. 💨
Okay okay hear us out! Most of us breathe too rapidly and too shallowly. Instead focus on slower, deeper breaths with longer rests and holds in between. The box breathing technique is a great way to train yourself. 💪

Checking in on your breathing periodically throughout the day is great not only to help wean yourself off of mouth breathing but the technique also calms you down, helps improve your digestion and encourages your body back into its natural rhythm!
4 counts breathe in through your nose... 4 counts hold...
4 counts breathe out through your nose… 4 counts hold...
Repeat!

*Another great deep breathing technique is adding a drop or 2 of your favorite essential oil to the palm of your hands. Rub them together and then cup your hands over your nose and mouth and deeply inhale through your nose. Pull your hands away and exhale, then repeat.

We especially love this with some eucalyptus essential oil to help clear out our airways during sniffle season.
