When Healing Becomes Emotional:
Understanding Somato-Emotional Release in Cranial Work

Have you ever had a moment during a session where tears appeared out of nowhere? Maybe you felt a wave of relief? Maybe you left feeling lighter than when you arrived? Well, you’re not alone & there’s a name for it!
What Is Somato-Emotional Release?

In the world of craniosacral therapy, this experience is known as Somato-Emotional Release (SER) — a concept developed by Dr. John Upledger, one of the pioneers of modern cranial therapy.

Dr. Upledger observed something fascinating over decades of practice: the body doesn’t only hold physical tension — it can hold emotional tension too.

Memories, stress, grief, overwhelm, fear, and even long-forgotten experiences can become stored in the body as tightness, restriction, or protective patterns.
And sometimes, when the nervous system finally feels safe enough, those layers gently begin to let go.
Why Emotions Show Up in a Physical Session
We often think of emotions as “in the mind” and physical issues as “in the body.” But the truth is, they are deeply connected. Your nervous system doesn’t separate the two.

Stress changes muscle tone. Grief can affect posture and breath. Long-term emotional strain can show up as headaches, jaw tension, tight shoulders, or digestive trouble.  So it makes perfect sense that when the body begins to unwind physically, emotions may surface as well.

In fact, it’s often a sign that healing is happening on more than one level.
What It Looks Like in Real Life
Somato-Emotional Release doesn’t always look dramatic.
Sometimes it’s:
  • a deep, spontaneous sigh
  • unexpected tears
  • a feeling of warmth or calm
  • a sudden sense of peace
  • or simply the sensation of something “letting go.”

And sometimes it’s subtle — a quiet shift that you only notice after the session is over. If emotion comes up during a session, there’s no need to feel self-conscious.

How Emotional Release Supports Physical Healing
Here’s the beautiful part: When emotional blockages soften, physical blockages often soften too.

Tension that seemed stuck for years can begin to move. Breathing can feel easier. Headaches can lighten. The whole system can flow more freely. That’s because the body works as one connected unit. Emotional patterns influence physical patterns, and physical shifts can influence emotional well-being.

Somato-Emotional Release is never something we force or chase; our role is simply to support that process with patience, presence, and gentle hands-on care.
How Cool Is That?
The idea that your body knows how to release what it’s been carrying — without being told — is pretty amazing. It reminds us that healing isn’t just mechanical - it's human! So if you’ve ever found yourself getting emotional on the treatment table, know that nothing is wrong; your body is just doing what it was designed to do.

And that’s a very powerful thing!
