🚫 What’s That Smell?
Why We’re a Fragrance-Free Office—and What We Use Instead
If you’ve ever walked into a space and immediately felt your head start to ache, your nose start to itch, or your mood shift—you may already know more about fragrance sensitivity than you think.
We get asked about this a lot, so we’re taking time this month to explain:
🌿 Why synthetic fragrance can be harmful
🌿 What we use instead
🌿 And why we ask you to help keep our space fragrance-free
Let’s start with what “fragrance” really means.

Let’s start with what “fragrance” really means.
🧪 Fragrance: The Hidden Chemical Cocktail
If you flip over most lotions, body sprays, perfumes, or even household cleaners, you’ll probably find one small word tucked somewhere on the label: “Fragrance” or “Parfum.”
It seems harmless enough—until you realize that one single word can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemical ingredients. In the U.S., companies are not required to list individual fragrance ingredients because they’re protected as “trade secrets.” That means the actual formula is completely hidden from you—even when it’s sitting on your skin or being sprayed in your home.

The Problem? These Hidden Ingredients Can Include:
- Phthalates – used to make scent last longer, but linked to hormone disruption and reproductive harm
- Synthetic musks – known to accumulate in the body and affect the endocrine system
- Benzene derivatives & aldehydes – associated with cancer risk and neurotoxicity
- Allergens & respiratory irritants – that can trigger asthma, headaches, brain fog, and skin reactions
Even “natural” or “green” products can still contain synthetic fragrance if they don’t disclose full ingredients. And unfortunately, no regulation requires that “fragrance-free” or “unscented” products be truly chemical-free. Many still include masking agents to cover up the original scent.
😷 Who’s Affected?
The short answer? Everyone.
Even if you don’t notice immediate reactions, fragrance chemicals accumulate in the body over time—stored in fat, disrupting hormones, overloading detox organs, and triggering inflammation behind the scenes.

Those most at risk include:
- People with hormone imbalances or fertility issues
- Children, pregnant women, and developing babies
- Individuals with migraines, autoimmune conditions, or skin sensitivities
- Those with asthma, allergies, or chemical sensitivity
- And… well, most of us these days!
🧘♀️ Why We’re a Fragrance-Free Office
We’re committed to creating a safe, calm, and healing environment for every patient who walks through our doors. That includes taking fragrance seriously—because even small exposures can have a big impact, especially on sensitive nervous systems and lymphatic flow.
This is why we kindly ask that all patients avoid wearing:
🚫 Perfume or cologne
🚫 Scented lotions, hair products, or body sprays
🚫 Clothing that’s been washed in strongly fragranced detergent or dryer sheets

When one person walks into the office wearing synthetic fragrance, it doesn’t just affect them—it affects everyone else in the building. Especially in a space focused on healing and detoxification, this level of chemical exposure can be overwhelming for the body. Thank you for honoring this with us.
🌿 What We Use Instead: Pure Essential Oils
Our office doesn’t smell like chemicals… and that’s on purpose.
Instead of synthetic air fresheners, candles, or cleaning sprays, we use pure Young Living essential oils to create a calm, clean, and therapeutic environment. Essential oils are distilled directly from plants—flowers, trees, roots, citrus peels—and offer both aroma and actual wellness support.

In our space, we diffuse oils like:
- Lavender for relaxation and emotional release
- Peppermint for clarity and focus
- Citrus oils (like Orange and Lemon) for mood elevation
- Thieves for immune support and a crisp, clean scent
We also use Young Living’s Thieves cleaning line to safely clean treatment rooms, laundry, and surfaces—without irritating the skin or lungs. These products are free from harmful preservatives, synthetic fragrance, dyes, and bleach.
