What Are Endocrine Disruptors  - and Why You Should Care.

Picture
Your hormones are powerful messengers, guiding everything from your mood and energy to your metabolism, fertility, and immune function. But what happens when those messages get scrambled by outside interference?

That’s exactly what endocrine disruptors do.

What Are Endocrine Disruptors?
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances—often synthetic—that interfere with the natural hormone signals in your body. They can mimic, block, or alter hormone levels, throwing your delicate hormonal balance out of sync. These chemicals are found in many everyday products, including:
  • Artificial fragrances (candles, air fresheners, perfumes)
  • Plastics (BPA, phthalates)
  • Conventional cleaning supplies
  • Skincare and personal care items (parabens, oxybenzone)
  • Pesticides and non-organic produce
Even small, regular exposures can build up over time and may contribute to issues like:
  • Fatigue and brain fog
  • Hormonal imbalances and PMS
  • Fertility challenges
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Increased risk of cancer

Why You Should Care
The endocrine system is incredibly sensitive. Disruptions don’t have to be huge to have an impact, especially over time. This is particularly important for:
  • Women in their reproductive years
  • Children and developing babies
  • Anyone dealing with hormone-sensitive conditions
The goal isn't to eliminate all exposures (which is nearly impossible), but to reduce the load your body has to deal with. Every small choice adds up.

Simple Swaps That Make a Big Impact
Reducing your exposure to endocrine disruptors doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some small, sustainable swaps to get started:
  • Use essential oils instead of synthetic candles and room sprays
  • Choose fragrance-free or naturally scented personal care products
  • Switch to glass or stainless steel food storage
  • Opt for organic produce when possible
  • Upgrade your cleaning products to truly clean ones (more on that below!)

Watch Out for Greenwashing
Unfortunately, not every product labeled “natural” or “eco-friendly” is actually safe. This is where greenwashing comes in—a marketing tactic where companies use misleading terms to appear cleaner than they are.
Always read labels carefully and get familiar with common red flags. Not sure where to start? Download our [Reading Labels Pocket Guide] to feel more confident navigating ingredient lists.
